Yes a winter cookout would be a fun social for us and a warm campfire.
Reposting my Campfire tips from the CSU thread:
My tip for campfire cooking is to remember to bring your cast iron skillet and a dutch oven to cook that great cobbler you will have one night. And do not forget to bring heavy duty pot holders for handling the cast iron skillet and heavy dutch oven so you do not burn your paws. And bring a secure jar to put bacon drippings in for the next meal.

I left my comment at CsU also. My tip is to bake your potatoes wrapped in foil in a dutch oven over the coals. Remember to poke your potatoes so they don’t explode. 30-45 minutes should be fine.
My huMom and Angel Scout Ali say that foil and cast iron are the best for cooking while camping.

I, too, posted my tips at CSU, so here’s a recap:
Prior to your campout, chop/cube chunks of your favorite meat (beef, chicken, lamb, pork) and place in baggies, along with some wooden skewers. Also chop up your favorite veggies (one or more kinds).
When ready to roast, make shiskabobs of one or mixed meat chunks along with the veggies. You can mix and match the meat and veggie types. Drizzle with butter or olive oil, and grill for about 5 minutes, turning frequently. This is like roasting marshmallows, but even more fun!

Oh, We left our comments at CSU. Here’s my cooking tip:
Cut up large chunks or slices of your favorite fruit(s) – doesn’t work well with berries. Put them in baggies, along with some wooden skewers.
You can make “kabobs” of one or mixed fruit, drizzled with butter, maple syrup or honey. Roast over the campfire or grill for a minute or two. The fruit will be crunchy and tender, and oh so sweet!

We often BBQ slices of pineapple during the summer…we’ll have to try it when camping! It’s scrumptious!

Pineapple is pawsome grilled, roasted and on kebobs!!
To cook taters, You can wrap ’em up in tin foil and bury them in the coals.

My campfire tip:
“Fun With Dogs”:
Grill some meat over the campfire.
Holding meat in your teeth, climb a tree.
Make yourself comfortable on a wide branch, near enough to enjoy the warmth from the campfire
Call to the dog that you have fresh cooked meat.
Smirk at dog on ground, who is jumping and barking and trying to get the meat.
Eat meat while making lots of “mmmmmm yummy” noises.
